Premier announces the start of Taiwan's 5G network pursuit

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Following the conclusion of the Executive Yuan's three-day summit meeting on the five-generation (5G) mobile broadband network, Premier Jiang Yi-hua yesterday announced the commencement of efforts towards accelerating development of the fledgling technology.

Over the course of the summit, a blueprint for Taiwan's 5G pursuit was formulated by the National Science Council (國科會), the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (電電工會), with Minister Without Portfolio Simon Chang (張善政) selected to oversee the coordination of developmental efforts.

Development of the 5G market will be based on an incubation platform approach where creativity is fostered for eventual commercialization, similar to the precedents set by TSMC where the company's early success in the semiconductor sector helped propel the rise of Taiwan's fabless manufacturing industry.

Jiang remarked that with the conclusion of the 4G network operating license auctions last year, Taiwan is poised to enter an age of high-speed mobile broadband connectivity. Jiang stated that in the age of rapidly evolving technology, Taiwan must forge ahead in development through an advanced start in the pursuit for the 5G network, creating a competitive edge for its industries.

National Science Council Deputy Minister Lin Yi-bing (林一平), stated that the underlying principles of the 5G pursuit lies in technological exploration and cultivation of talent, with goals to increase control of vital key technologies among Taiwan's companies through an platform for innovation. Lin, however, warned against the dangers of hasty and impetuous investments in the effort, and allocate resources efficiently.
