Tablet sales help Asustek become No. 2 PC maker in Japan in 2013

TAIPEI--Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc. (華碩電腦) was ranked the second-largest personal computer maker in Japan last year, thanks to its tablet sales, according to data from the Tokyo-based research firm BCN Inc.

BCN, which tracks retail sales of consumer items in Japan, found that Asustek held a 16.1 percent share of Japan's 2013 PC market — including notebooks, desktops and tablets — second only to Apple Inc.'s 19.1 percent.

In third to fifth places were Japanese companies NEC Corp. with a 15.9 percent share of the market, Toshiba Corp. with 13.2 percent, and Fujitsu Ltd. with 12.2 percent.

The top two vendors in Japan's tablet market were Apple and Asustek, with a 45.1 percent and 34.5 percent share, respectively.

Japanese electronics maker Sony Corp. was third with a 3.9 percent share, followed by Taiwan's Acer Inc. (宏碁電腦) with 3.2 percent and China's Lenovo Group Ltd. with 1.8 percent, BCN said.

In the notebook PC rankings, however, Asustek held only an 8 percent market share and ranked fifth, lagging behind four Japanese manufacturers that all secured a double-digit share of the market.

In BCN's monthly tablet sales survey, five of the top-10 best-selling tablets in Japan in December were Asustek's, with the 32GB model of the low-cost Nexus 7 rising to No. 1 from sixth place in November.

Apple's original iPad mini, with a 16GB storage capacity and Wi-Fi connectivity, remained in second place in December, while the new 16GB Wi-Fi iPad Air fell to third after leading the rankings in November when it debuted.
