Mediatek's Octa-Core to advance smartphones

Chinese smartphone maker TCL announced on Wednesday, Dec. 25 it will start marketing its “true 8-core” flagship phone soon.

Ming-Kai Tsai (蔡明介), Chairman and CEO of Taiwan chip maker MediaTek Inc.(聯發科), said at an official launch ceremony for the TCL Idol X+ in Beijing that mass marketing of the new device would begin in Taiwan in January 2014.

More Chinese smartphone makers are expected to launch their new 8-core products then, he predicted.

The Idol X+ features the latest MediaTek 2.0Ghz true and MT6592 true 8-core chip with 2GB of RAM. Like previous TCL phones, it measures just 7.9 mm with a built-in battery, according to the Gizchina.com website.

In July, 2013, MediaTek became the first system-on-chip (SoC) supplier to announce the development of an octa-core mobile device SoC capable of processing tasks with eight CPU cores concurrently, a solution the company refers to as "True Octa-Core," according to the company website.

The new chip was released in November.

Featuring a 5-inch full HD display (1920 x 1080) and super narrow bezels of 1.9mm, the TCL phone sports a 13 mega-pixel rear sensor with F2.0 aperture. The main camera features fast auto-focus and image stabilization functions, according to a performance review posted on the website.

In addition, the audio gets a boost from the dedicated ES9018 Hi-Fi headphone amplifier and Maxim 9720 dual external speakers, the review says.
