TAIPEI, Taiwan -- As of the end of November, the number of foreign workers employed in Taiwan was tallied at 484,367 persons, up by nearly 40,000 from figures recorded last year, according to a latest update published by the Council of Labor Affairs yesterday.
The council attributes the increase in foreign workers to Taiwan's aging population, declining birthrate, and relaxed regulatory policies on the hiring of domestic helpers enacted three years ago.
The council stated that the number of foreign workers employed in Taiwan is growing rapidly, as in just three years the figure is poised to exceed the 500,000 benchmark; in the past, it had taken at least a full decade for the number of foreign workers to grow by 100,000.
