KAOHSIUNG -- Budget carrier Air Busan launched its first non-stop flight between South Korea's Busan and Taiwan's Kaohsiung Wednesday, a move which Kaohsiung officials hope will encourage more visitors to enjoy the southern city's warm winters.
The new route will offer four round-trip flights a week between Busan's Gimhae International Airport and Kaohsiung International Airport.
The three-hour flight starts at NT$4,999 (US$169), according to the airline. Wednesday's maiden flights in either direction were about 85 percent filled.
Speaking at a launch ceremony at Kaohsiung's airport, Deputy Mayor Lee Yung-te encouraged Busan residents to head south to Taiwan for the winter.
In addition to year-round warm weather, Kaohsiung boasts 11 golf courses within city limits, each of which provides “low-cost, high quality service,” Lee said.
Air Busan President Kim Soo-cheon, also at the event, said he was confident in the potential for growth in tourism between the two cities.
