Taiwanese businessman recognized by Japan for promoting bilateral ties

TAIPEI--The founder of Taiwan's Chimei Group (奇美實業) was awarded a medal by Japan in Taipei Tuesday in recognition of his long term efforts to promote bilateral trade relations and exchanges.

Hsu Wen-lung (許文龍), 85, received a citation from Japan's representative to Taiwan Sumio Tarui at a ceremony held at the Taipei Office of Japan's Interchange Association. He was later conferred with the medal.

The association represents Japanese interests in Taiwan in the absence of diplomatic ties.

The medal represents the Japanese government's recognition of Hsu for his part in promoting economic relations and exchanges between Japan and Taiwan, and his contributions to the internationalization of Japanese enterprises, Tarui said.

Describing Taiwan-Japan economic ties as at their best in 40 years, he said this is the result of efforts by people like Hsu.

Hsu's plastic manufacturing company has provided key components to many Japanese companies for automobiles and household appliances, according to Tarui.

Tarui also thanked Hsu for his business' donations to Japan in the wake of the devastating earthquake and ensuing tsunami of March 11, 2011. Chimei Group donated US$2 million to help with Japan's relief efforts.

In response, Hsu said he was grateful to receive the medal.

The Chimei Group includes companies involved in optoelectronics, the petrochemical industry and food. A museum and a culture foundation are also under the group.
