The top-tier iPhone 5S will start from NT$22,500 (US$765) for a 16GB model, NT$25,900 for a 32GB model and NT$29,500 for a 4GB model, representing a premium of NT$400 to NT$600 over the iPhone 5 models that went on sale in Taiwan last December.
The less expensive plastic-backed iPhone 5C will start from NT$18,900 for a 16GB model and NT$22,500 for a 32GB model, according to Apple Taiwan.
The new iPhones are set to hit the local market Oct. 25 and the country's three main telecom operators have received about 150,000 preorders for the iPhone 5S, far exceeding the first wave of deliveries, according to local media.
Chunghwa Telecom Co., Taiwan's largest mobile operator, said Oct. 15 that presale iPhone 5S models in all colors and capacities sold out within just an hour, with interest in the gold-tinted version particularly strong because it is the first time Apple has offered a phone in that color.
However, the response from subscribers of the two other major carriers — Taiwan Mobile Co. and Far EasTone Telecommunications Co. — was less enthusiastic than for previous iPhone launches in previous years, market sources said.
