CNATAIPEI--Wholesale prices of roses are 10 percent higher in the run-up to this year's Chinese Lover's Day due to the devastation of a recent typhoon, the Taipei Flower Auction Co. said yesterday.

Red roses, which are the top-selling products for Lover's Day — which falls on Aug. 13 this year — are selling wholesale at between NT$250 (US$8.30) and NT$350 per bunch of 20 blossoms this year, the company said.
The retail price will average around NT$1,000 per bunch, according to the company.
Wholesale prices this year were pushed up by a 20-percent fall in production in the wake of Typhoon Soulik, which struck in July and devastated the main rose-growing regions in Nantou County, central Taiwan, it said.
