Major Japanese developer to build Linkou outlet complex

TAIPEI--Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd., a major real estate developer in Japan, will construct a brand name outlet complex in Linkou Township in New Taipei, the city government said Thursday.

Takeshi Suzuki, managing director of the Japanese company, signed an investment deal with New Taipei Mayor Eric Chu that same day to implement the project under the build-operate-transfer model.

At the signing ceremony, Chu said the cooperation project reminds him of Odaiba, an artificial island in Tokyo Bay, which has convenient transportation and sophisticated living facilities.

The complex will help attract people to shop and live in Linkou, the mayor said.

It is hoped that Mitsui Fudosan's first project in Taiwan will be successful, Chu said, noting that the company operates 12 brand name outlets in Japan.

Apart from brand name stores, a cinema and restaurants will also be included in the complex, which means patrons could spend all day there, Suzuki said.

With an initial investment of NT$5.45 billion (US$182 million), the project will be constructed on a 6.74 hectare plot close to the Airport Access MRT System and the Linkou Interchange of Freeway No. 1, said Yeh Huey-ching, director of the city government's department of economic development.

With its luxury stores, cinema, food court and supermarket, the mall will become a new leisure spot in northern Taiwan, Yeh said.

The project is scheduled to be completed in 2017 and is expected to create 2,000 new jobs, according to the city government.
