HTC's Butterfly phone becomes bestseller in the first quarter: IDC

TAIPEI -- HTC Corp.'s Butterfly smartphone has become the bestseller in Taiwan for the first quarter of this year as larger-screen models gained traction among local consumers, said tech-tracking firm International Data Corp. (IDC) yesterday.

Sporting a 5-inch full-HD display and 16-gigabyte built-in memory, the HTC Butterfly held more than 10-percent share of the market for the top spot, followed by the 16GB model of Apple's iPhone 5 and the 16GB version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, IDC said in a report.

"Consumer buying of the HTC Butterfly was partially delayed to the first quarter from the fourth quarter, when the phone had a supply shortage," Joey Yen, a research manager at IDC Taiwan, said by telephone.

She noted that 5-inch-and-up models accounted for 24 percent of the total smartphone shipments during the first quarter of 2013, an increase from 13 percent in the fourth quarter of last year.

Total mobile phone shipments in Taiwan — including those of feature phones and smartphones — reached 2.32 million units in the first three months of 2013, up 3 percent from the previous quarter and 5 percent from the same period of last year, the IDC report said.

Smartphone shipments also hit a quarterly record of 1.86 million units, accounting for 80 percent of the country's total mobile phone shipments, the report stated.

The growth of the overall phone market was mainly driven by robust shipments of high-end smartphones, with the first quarter traditionally being the high season for mobile phone sales, according to IDC.
