Foxconn, affiliates to ramp up retail outlets

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Leaders of Foxconn and its affiliates yesterday indicated plans to establish up to 30 additional retail locations in the Greater China markets this year.

Terry Gou, chairman of Foxconn, and his brother, Gou Tai-chiang (郭台強), chairman of Foxlink (正崴), indicated that while there are no plans for Web-based retail, Foxconn and its affiliates will open up to 30 retail locations in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. The comments were in response to questions from the press as they attended an annual family memorial and tomb-sweeping event.

In contrast to Apple's recent apologies to mainland China customers, the company has yet to address its customers in Taiwan. Gou Tai-chiang said that the situation will improve with time, while indicating that it is natural for Apple to favor the Chinese market, as it is vastly larger than the Taiwan market.

In addition, Gou Tai-chiang indicated that the domains of Web-based and brick and mortar retail represent a form of competitive coexistence. The landscape of the retail industry is rapidly evolving, and it is vital for enterprises to detect and capitalize on the changing trends of retail, said Gou Tai-chiang. Web-based and brick and mortar retail models may both be utilized to complement an enterprise's operations, Gou Tai-chiang added.

"In the current Internet-enabled age, virtual Web-based retail will proliferate in the future," said Gou Tai-chiang.

Meanwhile, Terry Gou expressed concern over the H7N9 outbreak in China, and said he hopes that mainland authorities succeed in containing its spread. In addition, he urged against the growing hostilities and reported impending armed conflict on the Korean Peninsula.
