Quanta Computer reports highest EPS among top 5 notebook makers

TAIPEI--Quanta Computer Inc., the world's largest contract notebook provider, reported NT$6.01 (US$0.2) in earnings per share (EPS) in 2012, the highest among Taiwan's top five notebook makers, according to research firm Gartner Inc.

Global personal shipments were down 3.5 percent in 2012 from a year earlier, affecting the revenues and earnings of the five notebook makers, Gartner said in a report released Saturday.

But Pegatron Corp. saw EPS jump 532 percent in 2012 to NT$2.71 to finish second among the big five because of gains in its non-notebook business, mainly orders from Apple Inc. to assemble iPhones and iPads.

Compal Electronics Inc, the world's second-largest notebook contractor, and Wistron Corp., one of Taiwan's leading original design manufacturers, were hurt by their late entry into the non-notebook category, and it was reflected in their earnings, the report said.

Compal Electronics' EPS slipped to NT$1.47 in 2012 from NT$2.53 the previous year, hitting a nearly 18-year low, while Wistron posted an EPS of NT$0.82, down 0.06 percent from 2011.

Inventec Corp., the world's No. 4 contract laptop PC maker, better withstood the decline in notebook shipments in 2012, with EPS rising to NT$0.9 from NT$0.79 a year earlier, the report said.

Pegatron's diversification strategy also delivered the strongest revenue growth among the big five in 2012, with sales increasing 56 percent year-on-year to NT$755.48 billion.

In contrast, Quanta Computer's sales were down 10 percent to NT$972.64 billion, and Compal's sales fell 1.4 percent to NT$682.77 billion.

Inventec posted NT$320.45 billion in revenue, a drop of 5.3 percent from 2011, and Wistron's sales were relatively flat at NT$657.83 billion.

As for 2013, Pegatron has forecast single-digit growth for its notebook shipments, while Compal has projected double-digit growth.
