Steel firms worried about steady supply of power

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Amid rising calls for scrapping nuclear power, iron and steel products manufacturers have expressed worries about whether Taiwan would be able to provide a steady supply of electricity, which they said is crucial to their companies' competitiveness.

Lin Ming-ju, chairman of Feng Hsin Iron & Steel in Taichung, Central Taiwan, said despite concerns about safety at Taiwan's fourth nuclear power plant once it is put into operation, the scrapping of nuclear power and shift to renewable energy will not be feasible, as the electricity supply will not be stable.

Lin Da-chun, a spokesman for the company, also said that an unstable power supply will make electricity tripping easily and cause production losses.
