Starbucks Taiwan to expand stores to 300 this year

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Starbucks Taiwan is planning to boost the number of stores on the island to 300 this year, said the firm's President Hsu Kuang-yu yesterday.

"We've been in Taiwan for 15 years," he said. "We've not only survived the global financial crisis but have also created more business through the sale of peripheral products."

According to him, last year the firm saw pre-tax profit grow by 10 percent, and this year the company plans to expand the number of stores to 300.

"Currently, Taiwan has 285 Starbucks, a number we'd like to see increase in 2013," he said. "We plan to expand our presence to second- and third-tier cities with populations of 60,000 to 100,000. Last year we opened stores in Shalu, Taichung City, and Fengshan, Kaohsiung City. This year we also plan to open stores in Dajia, Taichung City; Yuanlin, Changhua County; and Tainan City."

Starbucks Taiwan has been able to open 20 to 30 new stores each year for the past three years, and all stores, old or new, have been able to hit their revenue targets, Hsu said. "This is the reason why we were able to see sales grow by 10 percent annually over the past few years," he added.

He also discussed the people of Taiwan, which he said has developed a coffee culture. "Currently in Taiwan, as many as 75 percent of the people drink one cup of coffee everyday," he said.
