Deputy trade representative to arrive from US TuesdayBy Joseph Yeh ,The China Post TAIPEI, Taiwan -- United States Deputy Trade Representative Demetrios Marantis will lead an interagency delegation to Taiwan next Tuesday for the upcoming U.S.-Taiwan Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) talks, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) said yesterday.
March 7, 2013, 12:00 am TWN Marantis will be joining the TIFA talks, held under the auspices of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO), to begin on March 11 and 12 in Taipei, the AIT said in a released statement. The delegation consists of officials from the U.S. Trade Representative and the U.S. Departments of State, Commerce, and Agriculture, as well as officials from the AIT who are scheduled to participate in related bilateral meetings, it added. TIFA was signed in 1994 as a framework for Taiwan-U.S. dialogue on trade-related issues in the absence of official diplomatic ties, but has been suspended since 2007 mainly because of controversies over imports of American beef containing the leanness-enhancing drug ractopamine. Last July, Taiwan's Legislative Yuan passed amendments to a food safety act, paving the way for the country to import U.S. beef containing ractopamine, and there have been numerous reports since indicating that Taipei and Washington are expected to re-open talks under TIFA soon.
