HTC, Samsung prepare for campaign to promote latest flagship handsets

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Rival handset makers HTC and Samsung are poised to lock horns in the highly contested smartphone market this week, as they ramp up marketing efforts to promote their flagship models for this year.

First unveiled in London on Feb. 19, the New HTC One will be introduced in Taiwan on Thursday. The company has enlisted the endorsement of the high-profile band Mayday (五月天), counting on its popularity and legions of fans.

A recent comment praising the company's new handset, posted on a social networking website by the band's lead singer, has generated interest from fans on both sides of the strait, marking a small victory in the first skirmishes of the forthcoming media marketing battle. Some Internet users claimed that they will choose HTC for patriotic reasons, while others are willing to consider HTC's new flagship for their next smartphone purchase.

Meanwhile, Samsung released the first of a series of cryptic videos to promote the release of its Galaxy S IV flagship handset on March. 14. The video features a boy tasked with keeping the secret of the handset until its release date. With the exception of the video, the company has thus far not released any details on their flagship handset.

However, the rumor mill is rife with speculation on the specs of the forthcoming Galaxy S IV. The handset is reported to be equipped with a Solux display, which is also used on the New HTC One, as opposed to Samsung's proprietary AMOLED display technology. Samsung's latest handset will also have its screen expanded from 4.8 inches to 5 inches, and will feature a plastic chassis, while HTC's offering sports an aluminum body.
