MWC award-winning HTC One to debut March 7

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Fresh from winning the top prize at the just-concluded Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Spain, the latest version of the HTC One will debut in Taiwan on March 7, the Taiwanese smartphone maker announced yesterday.

The shiny new phone was originally scheduled to go on sale in Taiwan on March 4, but the company said in a statement that the launch date would be postponed to March 7.

The rescheduling of the new phone's debut was likely related to changes in the schedules of top HTC executives, sources said.

HTC CEO Peter Chou and Chief Marketing Officer Benjamin Ho are expected to attend the ceremony marking the new HTC One's local debut.

It has also been confirmed that popular Taiwanese pop band Mayday will endorse the new phone and get involved in its promotion.

The device, which was launched in London and New York on Feb. 19 to rave reviews, is priced between NT$23,000 (US$777) and NT$26,000 in those two markets.

Its retail price in Taiwan and other Asian countries has yet to be announced.

Industry sources said HTC Corp. will launch a 16GB HTC One for Taiwanese consumers and that the company will collaborate with Taiwan's three top telecom operators — Chunghwa Telecom, Far EasTone and Taiwan Mobile — in selling it locally.

Market analysts said they are generally optimistic about the HTC One's sales prospects.

Production has shifted into high gear since the second half of February, sources said. More than 185 telecom carriers around the world will partner with HTC Corp. in promoting the new device.

Industry sources said they believe that the latest version of the HTC One will sell far better than previous models.

It has a 4.7-inch display with full-HD resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, a 1.7-gigahertz quad-core processor and a new "UltraPixel" camera that enables ultra-sharp photo shooting and video recording, according to the company.

The Android-powered model also features a cutting-edge audio technology called "HTC BoomSound" that offers dual frontal stereo speakers with built-in amplifiers, used in a mobile phone for the first time, HTC said.

The phone was named "Best New Mobile Handset, Device or Tablet at Mobile World Congress 2013 held in Barcelona," beating other nominees from big brand names, such as the Sony Xperia Z, the LG Optimus G Pro, the Nokia 105 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0.

It also claimed the title of "Best in Show" at the inaugural TechRadar MWC Awards, which were sponsored by the online publication TechRadar.
