AmCham regional meet makes return to Taipei

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Taipei said it will host the annual conference for Asia-Pacific members for the first time in 20 years.

Taipei was chosen to host the Spring Conference of the Asia-Pacific Council of American Chambers of Commerce (APCAC) through a competitive application process, after repeated bids since 1993.

"The increased interest in Taiwan reflects changes in the past two years," said AmCham senior director Don Shapiro, who cited the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) of 2010 and recent talks over a free trade agreement with Singapore.

APCAC is a two-day conference aimed at fostering interaction among company leaders and politicians from Taiwan and the United States. Panels include "How FTAs & RTAs are changing the economic landscape," "Policy recommendations to U.S. administration and Congress" and "Realigning regional supply chains."

APCAC will showcase Taiwan's leadership and innovations with key issues, according to AmCham Chairman Alan Eusden, who said the conference "can only be good for Taiwan."

"AmCham Taipei believes that the conference will improve the business relationship between Taiwan and the United States," said AmCham President Andrea Wu.

The 2013 APCAC, slated for March 21 to 22, is titled "A 2020 Vision for U.S.-Asia Partnership."

Confirmed guests include Morris Chang of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.; William Stanton, former director of the American Institute in Taipei; Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Francis Liang (梁國新); and Tami Overby, vice president for Asia of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Overby was president of the AmCham Korea from 1995 to 2009. "She was personally involved in the free trade agreement between U.S. and Korea, and now she's actively involved in the (Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership)," said Wu.
