ECCT expands influence nationwide

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The European Chamber of Commerce Taiwan (ECCT) can now exercise even more wide-ranging influence in terms of Taiwan business partnerships, according to the group.

The ECCT yesterday celebrated its 25th anniversary and its expansion into a nationwide organization with guests including President Ma Ying-jeou and Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌) at The Grand Hotel.

The group's status as a nationwide association highlights its increasing activity and influence within Taiwan.

ECCT Chairman Giuseppe Izzo said the association wishes to benefit Taiwan's future economic growth through the introduction of European technology, skills, standards and business practices. According to the ECCT, the chamber currently holds investments valued at over US$31 billion within the nation.

Taiwan-EU Trade

President Ma urged European countries to quickly process the EU-Taiwan Trade Enhancement Measures in order to broaden the range of trade and commercial activities between the two sides.

Taiwan looks forward to the continuous prosperous business partnership with the ECCT, Ma said. He also said that in terms of boosting the nation's economic growth, the ECCT is one of the most important contributing groups in the process of integrating Taiwan's economy with that of the international community.

The president said that he is optimistic about the nation's economic growth in 2013, with GDP growth likely to rise beyond 3.5 percent.

"We are on the path of recovery," Ma said.

The president said that free trade zone cooperation with partners of Singapore and New Zealand will benefit Taiwan in joining Asia's regional economic integration. Additionally, the president said, European travelers account for up to 40 percent of the increased tourist numbers to Taiwan.

Although the global economy has been in recession over the past few years, the nation is looking forward to seeing more benefits from the cross-strait business boom, Ma added.

According to the ECCT, the chamber collaborates with 28 industries and support committees, and the ECCT has been providing concrete recommendations to improve Taiwan's commercial activities in various sectors to all levels of government. The chairman said ECCT aims to build a more dynamic, sustainable and successful economy for Taiwan.
