Chief of Vizio sets sights on sales in North America hitting 7 mil. in '13The China Post news staff TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The head of Vizio yesterday expressed his ambition to bring up North America TV shipments to 7 million this year, challenging its main competitor Samsung.
January 29, 2013, 12:03 am TWN The 7-million figure would represent a year-on-year increase of 20 percent, said Wang Wei. Vizio and Samsung are the two leading TV brands in North America and compete for the leadership status each quarter. Last year, Samsung led with a bigger market share due to its channeling advantage. Yet Vizio also proved to be a force to be reckoned with, having secured Best Buy as a new channel partner in addition to Costco, Target and Amazon. According to Wang, Vizio will lift shipments by 20 percent this year and continue to duke it out with Samsung. As for whether the company will launch its own branded smartphones, Wang said the firm does not rule anything out. “I'm confident about the TV-smartphone convergence, which will be a trend,” he said. “Nowadays people no longer just talk on their phones, which have also become social networking and entertainment devices.” According to statistics, about 35 million TVs were sold in the United States last year, of which 5.6 million to 5.7 million were made by Vizio, whose share in the large-size TV market hit 60 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012. “We'll focus primarily on TVs sized at 55, 60, 65 sand 70 inches, rather than on small-size TVs, which see more market entrants, especially those from China,” he said. |
