Four companies storm to profits in Dec.: TAIEX

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Four Taiwan-listed companies achieved strong month-on-month gains in December 2012 according to statistics released by the Taiwan Stock Exchange's main index (TAIEX) yesterday.

Despite domestic consumption remaining weak and Taiwan's poor economy in 2012, data showed that 13 Taiwan-listed companies recorded their highest month-on-month profits in December 2012.

Four Companies Record High

Four companies — Largan Precision (大立光), Hota industrial MFG. Co. Ltd. (和大), Taiwan Secom Co. Ltd. (中保) and St. Shine Optical Co. Ltd. (精華) — made their largest one-month profit in December 2012. These firms were the top profit-makers on the TAIEX, which includes around 1,500 Taiwan-listed companies.

Largan Precision's 2012 December revenue grew NT$3.1 billion, up 10.75 percent from the previous month. Hota industrial MFG. Co. Ltd.'s grew 20.07 percent month-on-month. Taiwan Secom Co. Ltd.'s gained 3.88 percent and St. Shine Optical Co. Ltd.'s growth increased 1.27 percent compared to November 2012.

The TAIEX said Largan Precision currently counts HTC and Apple as customers, which shows that increased demand for smartphones helped sales.

Largan Precision had four months of consecutive growth from September to December 2012. Its December performance was the highest of the four months.

According to the TAIEX, St. Shine Optical Co. Ltd. achieved an annual growth of 42.42 percent.

Uni-President Enterprises and Sercomm Strive for Profit

Uni-President Enterprises Corporation (UPE, 統一集團) and Sercomm Corporation (中磊) achieved better profits in 2012 compared to those of 2011.

Uni-President Enterprises, which forecast a stronger 2012 performance compared to the year before, achieved annual earnings of NT$46.85 billion.

Change in Sales Focus

Uni-President Enterprises said it focused on adjusting sales strategies. Oil, animal feed and flour products occupied a lesser share of production.

Earnings decreased 11 percent for flour products and 18 percent for animal feed. Oil products decreased 95 percent, health and fitness supplement food products increased 20 percent, said the company.

The firm also said its focus is shifting to instant noodles, frozen food, beverages, dairy products, soy sauce and meat. Its profits from instant noodles and frozen food were up 3 percent in December 2012.

The firm said beverage revenue was up 1 percent, dairy products gained 5 percent and soy sauce and meat profits grew 3 percent.

Sercomm Aims for Success

Sercomm Corporation (中磊) achieved a monthly growth rate of 53.58 percent in December 2012. Sercomm's sizable growth rate did not, however, place it at the top of the TAIEX in terms of total profit as it remains a comparatively smaller firm. The company said it aims to become “A Billion Company.” As part of a three-year-growth plan the company said it expects to achieve US$1 billion in profits by 2015.
