Microsoft to launch Win 8 in five local malls Friday

TAIPEI--Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system for personal computers will be launched in Taiwan in five major Taipei malls Friday, one day after the official launch in New York.

Various products that run on Windows 8 will be on display for users to experience the new system, and limited edition gifts will be given to visitors, according to Microsoft Taiwan Corp.

A sales event will be jointly held the same day by Taiwan's major telecom carriers — Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile Co. Ltd. and Far EasTone Telecommunications Co. Ltd. — to promote the touch-based system.

Meanwhile, Apple Inc., which unveiled the iPad mini, new additions to its Mac lineup and the fourth generation iPad Wednesday, is expected to be able to surpass Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc. in 2013 and become one of the top five global PC brands, according to a report from Digitimes Research.
