Asustek to unveil newest Padfone model this weekCNA TAIPEI -- Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc., the world's fifth-largest PC vendor, plans to unveil the latest addition to its array of mobile phones, through the launch of its second-generation hybrid smartphone on Oct. 16.
October 15, 2012, 4:25 pm TWN The Padfone 2 will be launched simultaneously in Taipei and Milan, Asustek said in an emailed invitation to the media, although it did not elaborate on the specifics of the new gadget. Asustek CEO Jerry Shen had said at an investor's conference on Aug. 29 that the company had begun investing substantially into its smartphone business, which was being seen as a key unit that would help the company gain leverage in the competitive mobile market. The second-generation Padfone will use new chips sourced from U.S. chip-aker Qualcomm Inc., which will also be unveiled at the Asustek event, Shen added.
