Taiwan needs confidence: Delta's Cheng

Taiwan needs to show more confidence in itself, said Cheng Chung-hua, chairman emeritus of Delta Electronics, yesterday.

He made the remarks during an event held by Ernst and Young yesterday, which was also attended by Pan Su-liang, chairman of Grand Formosa Regent Taipei.

Cheng's remarks came after the Ministry of Finance Monday released Taiwan's September export figure, which stood at US$27.17 billion, a rise of 10.4 percent compared to the same period last year and the highest in 14 months. The figure also capped a six-month losing streak.

While September exports increased, Cheng cited sluggishness in the U.S. and European economies and expressed his concerns the downturn may protract.

Yet he said Taiwan is likely to give an overall positive performance, given the hardworking nature of the Taiwanese people.

"Internationally, Taiwan is not doing so bad," Cheng said. "The only problem is, sometimes Taiwanese people are not very confidence about themselves. I'm sure by working together, Taiwanese people will survive this downturn fine."

Commenting on Taiwan companies' competitiveness, Cheng gave a positive assessment, saying Taiwan firms have accumulated a wealth of experience over the years.

"It's just that sometimes, people tend to think negatively due to all the negative news coverage," he said. "This situation needs to be changed."

Grand Formosa Regent Taipei Chairman Pan meanwhile expressed the view the economy will improve next year, after a turnaround in major countries including China, the United States and Japan.
