Garuda to restart Taipei-Jakarta flights

Indonesian flag carrier Garuda will resume its route from Jakarta to Taipei this May in response to the increasing tourist traffic between the two friendly nations.

"We are delighted to resume our route to Taiwan as Indonesians explore new tourist destinations here," General Manager of Garuda Indonesia's Taiwan operators Joseph Tendean told The China Post.

After eight years of suspension, Taipei and Jakarta will be reconnected by Garuda Indonesia, with many upgrades coming along with it.

The airline currently has 92 aircraft, with each only 5.8 years old on average, and is looking at expanding its fleet to 192 aircraft by 2015. After the new management took office in 2005, Garuda Indonesia has been evaluated by "IATA Operational Safety Audit" (IOSA) as "certified safe" since 2006. In 2009, the company was given the Roy Morgan Customer Satisfaction Award, which includes a four-star rating by Skytrax, the global benchmark for airline service standards. The following year, the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation named Garuda as Asia's leading service quality airline.

All these improvements and awards are "the fruit of our dedication to service our customers and commitment to being a safe and quality airline," Tendean said.

However, besides the fact that the company revived itself after its 2005 downturn, Tendean said "we are resuming our route to Taiwan for its lucrative opportunity."

In recent years, increasing numbers of Indonesian travelers have visited Taiwan. In 2011, 120,000 of them came to Taiwan, a 16-percent increase.
