1111 survey reports salary conditions in 2011“This is because jobs of R&D, construction, and project design require the most training,” Henry Ho (何啟聖), public relations director of 1111 said. The stagnation of the salaries of these jobs may be due to the declining housing market in Taiwan and the European debt crisis in 2011, 1111 stated. The European debt crisis hit Taiwan's IT industry severely and IT companies were forced to offer their employees unpaid leave in 2011. Jobs in the beauty industry, restaurants, and hotels, along with jobs in the transportation and lifestyle industries are of the lowest salary, yet salaries in these sectors are rising most rapidly. “This reflects the relatively lower threshold of these jobs and the growing demand of the service industry in Taiwan,” according to 1111 company. “The rising tourist industry and the growing number of tourists from mainland might be the cause,” the company claimed. In terms of the size of companies, big companies offer more in terms of salary than small companies, 1111 said. According to Ho, the salary of new employees rose from 2010 to 2011 on average. In terms of education level of new employees, in 2011, a college graduate might earn only NT$1,000 (US$31.25) more a month than a high school graduate. But with a master's degree, a person could earn NT$10,000 (US$312.5) more a month than a college graduate on average. The salary of a new employee with a Ph.D., however, dropped from NT$59,333 (US$1,854.16) to NT$50,269 (US$1570.28), by 18.03 percent from 2009 to 2011 on average, stated Ho.
