Taiwan, Japan associations to strengthen economic relations

TAIPEI -- Business representatives from Taiwan and Japan will sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) today in Taipei with the aim of boosting their countries' economies, according to Chung-hua Institution for Economic Research (CIER).

The MOU will serve as the basis for investment cooperation and technological exchanges between small and medium-sized enterprises on both sides, CIER said in a statement.

The signing of the MOU is one of the items on the agenda of a 30-member Japanese delegation that is visiting Taiwan from Feb. 13-16 to meet with Taiwanese trade authorities, local governments and commercial and educational organizations. The Japanese delegation is being led by Fukui Prefecture Governor Issei Nishikawa.

Tatsuo Kawada, chairman of the Fukui Prefecture chapter of Nippon Keidanren, will sign the MOU on behalf of his country's business delegation, while Tsay Ching-yen will sign on behalf of the Association for Taiwan Japan Cooperation on Industrial Technology in his capacity as the association's president.

Fukui's trade activity focuses on exports of textile, machinery and eye-wear and imports of aluminum ore and machinery. China and other Asian countries are its principal trading partners.

The current visit to Taiwan by the Fukui Prefecture chapter of Nippon Keidanren is its third in three years.
