Taiyen Biotech Co. will export table salt to JapanTaiyen Biotech Co. Chairman Hung Hsi-yao said the company will sign a long-term supply contract with the Japanese company, with the first shipment to be delivered in March at the earliest. Hung would not disclose the name of the Japanese customer or details of the contract, saying that some of the terms “still have to be worked out by the two sides.” According to Hung, Taiyen sells most of its salt products to the domestic market but has begun exporting some of its production in recent years to markets such as China, Vietnam, and Thailand. Taiyen also began to sell higher grade salt for medical purposes to China last year, but export volumes of both edible or medical-purpose salt remain small, Hung said. The opportunity to sell to Japan emerged last year after the country's massive earthquake and tsunami in March destroyed a salt field, leading to shortages in supply. | |||||||||||||
