China health groups want to work with Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Health groups from the other side of the strait have expressed their interest in working with Taiwan on offering medical service through cloud computing, said local experts yesterday.

The experts made the statement during a forum yesterday, organized by the Foundation of Taiwan Medical Development.

During the news conference, a demonstration was held to showcase how cloud computing may have medical applications: databases of health and medical records of different races of people were uploaded to the Internet for download by hospitals, which can then design preventive care programs based on these databases.

Huang Chun-hsiung, chairman of Mackay Hospital, said that the goal of telemedicine is to allow people to get medical service at any place, any time and through any device.

“In the midst of globalization, people are on the move all the time,” he said. “Hospitals alone can no longer satisfy all of people's medical needs.”

Lu Ming-feng, secretary-general of the Knowledge Creating and Sharing Association, pointed out that Taiwan is internationally renowned for its IT hardware manufacturing, and the island has more expertise in medicine than the other side of the strait.

He said mainland China has sent various medical delegations to Taiwan to study how technology and medicine merge, something that the island is good at.

For example, the Department of Health of the city of Wuhan, Hubei Provicne, has sent such a delegation to Taiwan, he said.

Besides Wuhan, Xiamen Hospital and Kuanjie Hospital in Beijing have also expressed their intention to work with Taiwan on offering preventive care programs based on cloud computing, experts said.
