Exports expected to hit new high in September: MOEA

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's export volume is expected to hit a new high in September, benefiting from the soaring Japanese yen and a predicted consumption boom in China, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) said yesterday.

The value of export orders received in August — to be published by the ministry later this month — is likely to increase to US$34 billion, up from US$33.83 billion for July, the MOEA said.

The ministry predicted that both export orders and export volume will rise further in September, with the export volume for the whole year reaching the target of US$272.9 billion.

According to Huang Chi-shih, chief of the MOEA's Department of Statistics, the appreciation of the Japanese yen will prompt foreign companies to switch their orders from Japan to Taiwan. Manufacturers of machinery, LEDs, passive components and digital cameras are likely to see their revenues hit new highs in September as a result, Huang said.

In addition, exports will also be boosted by China's week-long National Day holiday in early October, which is traditionally a shopping season, Huang said, adding that many Taiwan-invested consumer electronics retailers in China have begun to increase their orders in anticipation of expanded demand.

The official expressed optimism that exports will remain robust in the coming months, after the volume for August reached US$24.05 billion.

The Ministry of Finance had previously predicted that export volume will total US$141 billion in the second half of this year, with the monthly volume averaging US$23.5 billion.
