J Touch Corp. shares surge on stock debut

Touch screen manufacturer J Touch Corp. yesterday had its initial public offering (IPO) and saw its shares surge, on optimism demand for the products will rise given the popularity of various consumer electronic devices.

The company had its IPO price of NT$57 and opened at NT$80. It had risen to as high as NT$87.6 and closed up 52.63 percent at NT$87.

J Touch's plants will be running at full capacity by August, the company said, adding it may expand capacity in China.

The company's major clients include Samsung, Sony Ericsson, HTC, Motorola and Nokia.

Each month, J Touch produces 2 million resistive touch screens and 4 million capacitive touch screens.

During the first half, resistive screens accounted for 60 percent of total output, followed by the 20 to 30 percent for capacitive screens and 5 to 10 percent for traditional screens.

A resistive touch screen is composed of several layers, the most important of which are two thin, metallic, electrically conductive layers separated by a narrow gap. When the panel is touched, the two layers become connected, causing a change in the electrical current, which is then sent to the controller for processing.

A capacitive screen consists of an insulator such as glass, coated with a transparent conductor such as indium tin oxide. As the human body is also a conductor, touching the surface of the screen results in a distortion of the body's electrostatic field, measurable as a change in capacitance.
