Shortage of over NT$5 million reported in voucher issuance

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Quite a few voucher-distribution stations have reported being short tens of thousands of New Taiwan dollars in shopping vouchers after checking at the end of the distribution, according to informed sources.

The sources said almost all counties and cities experienced a shortage of shopping vouchers, with Taipei County alone posting the largest, at over NT$1.9 million, followed by Taichung County with NT$1.29 million, Taoyuan County with NT$933,000, Pingtung County NT$420,000, Tainan County NT$210,000 and Hualien County NT$140,000, among others.

Interior Minister Liao Liao-yi said the deficiency rate should be lower than the 0.005 percent estimated by his ministry, and the total deficiency volume is being calculated.

Vice Interior Minister Chien Tai-lang told a press conference yesterday morning that up to 91.3 percent or 21.17 million nationals picked up their vouchers, valued at a total of NT$76.23 billion, at 14,202 distribution stations in Taiwan and on offshore islands on Jan. 18.

Chien said his ministry has instructed local county and city governments to figure out all the possible deficiencies, and find out real factors leading to them.

There are around 1,203 postal branches around the island, with each responsible for distributing vouchers to over 10 distribution stations. This, coupled with lack of sufficient time for double checking the exact amount of vouchers each station needed, thus leading to discrepancies concerning the amounts of vouchers seen at the stations.

The vice minister continued that the ministry will discuss contracted insurance firms to determine any abnormalities in the insured vouchers, and compensation for the abnormalities, including shortages.
