Record NT$1.85 million in first charity climb

Members of Taipei’s international community showed up in force for the first ever International Climbathon for Charity at Taipei 101 Sunday, May 21, and to great effect. The organizer of the climb, the Canadian Society in Taiwan (CST), raised nearly double its target of NT$1 million in support of three local charity groups.

“We wanted to have a fun event, and do something good at the same time,” said CST president Jacques van Wersch.

“We ended with NT$1.85 million for the charity groups, which is probably a record for a foreign group in Taiwan. Plus, everyone enjoyed a great party,” he said.

“Taipei 101 showed real leadership by supporting the climb. It’s the first time this kind of thing has been done here, and it was a chance for Taiwan’s international community to come together,” he said.

Taiwan’s foremost expatriate groups, trade offices and members of the business community threw their support behind the climb, which benefited three local groups: the Garden of Hope Foundation, the Community Services Center and the Taipei City Hospital.

When climbers arrived at the 84th floor of the climb, they were treated to a buffet lunch, drinks and music, and even got to join in a yoga class. The fun at the top was obvious, but along the way health and safety came first.

“We worked with the Canadian Society very closely to make sure the activity was safe,” said Harace Lin, Taipei 101 President.

“Medics were on hand, but no one needed them. Everyone made it to the top 100 percent okay, and then had a great time at the party. Some people even wanted to keep on walking,” said van Wersch.
