Taiwan, El Salvador share common goals: El Salvador ambassador

The relationship between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and El Salvador has existed for almost 70 years unchanged and "it is not going to change, but become stronger and closer," according to Marta Chang de Tsien, El Salvador's ambassador to Taiwan.

Chang expressed her appreciation and highlighted the nation's cooperation in agriculture, medicine and Taiwan's support for the Central American integration process, participating as an extra regional observer for the SICA (Central American Integration System) and also as an observer of the Central American Parliament.

She also emphasized the nation's common goals. "We like to live in peace, democracy and we want the best for our country, so I think we have similar values with Taiwan and that's why we get along very well and maintain a strong, stable and friendly relationship."

Taiwan also supports El Salvador through the Central American Trade Office (CATO) in Taipei by organizing trade fairs, which promote business opportunities with El Salvador and other Central American nations.

In El Salvador, Taiwanese entrepreneurs have set up restaurants and clothing factories, among other businesses. El Salvador's exports to Taiwan include coffee, sugar and other agricultural commodities. "One of the main exports is gourmet coffees from the Bourbon, Pacas and Pacamara varieties that grow on the slopes of hills and volcanoes, the richest, most fertile soil for coffee growing.

The Taiwanese market has responded very well to El Salvador's products and last year El Salvador did very well at Taiwan's Tea, Wine and Coffee Fair. Since the signing of the free trade agreement, the country's exports to Taiwan have doubled because of lower and decreasing tariffs.

Chang spoke highly of the El Salvadorian students who have graduated from universities here in Taiwan. "They bring new ideas, new knowledge to El Salvador to help in areas of technology and agriculture, among other fields.

As for the future relationship between both countries, Chang stressed: "El Salvador and the Republic of China (Taiwan) are countries sharing many common values. Among them, and one of the most important, is liberty, since it transcends in the process of our history, both in political aspects and in our general development."

Finally Chang expressed: "Now that we are celebrating the 190th anniversary of our independence, as ambassador to this beautiful country, I take this opportunity to congratulate the Republic of China on its 100th anniversary." ■
