Commemorative stamps feature ecological beauty of Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan Post, as event organizer of the 21st Asian International Stamp Exhibition, will issue a series of commemorative stamps under the exhibition’s theme of the “Ecological Beauty of Taiwan.” The first to be launched is the stamp of Mikado Pheasant, also known as Syrmaticus Mikado, a bird species native to mountainous regions of Taiwan.

“The stamp will be formally issued at a face value of NT$25 on the first day of the exhibition on March 7,” said Taiwan Post Chairperson Ho Yuan-Hsuan. “It will not only feature the beauty of the unique bird species in Taiwan, but will also show forth Taiwan’s determination for wildlife preservation,” Ho stressed. The Mikado Pheasant, a member of the pheasant family, inhabits grassy terrain in high altitudes, from 2,000 to 3,200 meters above sea level, in central and southern Taiwan.

Mikado Pheasants walk and forage for food (a diet of various fruits, leaves, vegetation, seeds and invertebrates) in a manner similar to chickens, but look noticeably larger than the latter. A Mikado Pheasant measures 70-86 cm in body length and is distinguished by black feathers and a long tail with white horizontal stripes. Due to heavy hunting, the Mikado Pheasant is now treated as an endangered species living under special protective measures of the Taiwan government.

It will be the second time that Taiwan Post issues a Mikado Pheasant stamp, around 15 years since the first time in November 1993.

Following the debut of the Mikado Pheasant stamp in March, Taiwan Post will issue stamps of the oceanic world and of cactus flowers in April, stamps of the Taiwan National Museum in May, and stamps of Taiwanese birds and bridges in June. Except for the May issue of the museum stamps in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Taiwan National Museum, all other stamps will be issued to feature different aspects of the ecological beauty of Taiwan.

Meanwhile, Taiwan Post will issue a set of eight postcards featuring the beauty of Taiwan’s scenic spots such as Yangmingshan National Park, Hsinyi commercial district, Tachih Bridge, Tamsui and Wulai. These postcards will be launched on March 7 and will be available at the Taiwan Post booth at the exhibition.

Chinese bird paintings

In addition, Taiwan Post will issue a commemorative set of four stamps reprinted from four Chinese bird paintings collected as national treasures in the National Palace Museum. They are the works of prominent painters from the Sung, Yuan, Ming and Ching dynasties in Chinese history. The stamp set will be also issued on the first day of the exhibition, with each of the four stamps at a different face value of NT$5, NT$9, NT$13 and NT$15, respectively.

“These stamps will perfectly present the delicacy and elegance of the art of ancient Chinese paintings,” remarked Ho. He recommended that foreign guests at the exhibition visit the National Palace Museum during their stay in Taipei. “It’s very worthwhile for them to visit the museum, where they would be deeply impressed by the Chinese arts and cultures,” he stressed.

In addition, Ho also recommended the Postal Museum as another ideal place for foreign philatelists to visit. Established in December 1965, the Postal Museum has a comprehensive collection of Taiwan-issued stamps as well as the postal history of the island. In addition, there is a library housing over 40,000 postal and philately-related books, periodicals and other publications.
