Chinese game of diabolo turned into magic show

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Seven fifth-grade and sixth-grade students from Min Dao Elementary School in Mu Cha received high compliments from the members of the Welcome to Taipei International Club for their magical performance.

With wooden diabolos and a string, the children displayed a variety of patterns, either throwing them in the air or rolling them on the string. At the same time, the children were changing formations, jumping, and flipping on the stage.

Dr. Hsieh Su-yueh, the principal of Min Dao Elementary School, said these students had been invited to give performances around the world, and they have toured Europe, Asia, North America and South America.

Wu Li-chiu, the team’s coach, said the children had been trained for three years, practicing almost all day every Sunday. When asked what was the most difficult aspect of learning the diabolo, the children answered: “When the wooden diabolo drops from mid-air and hits our head.”

These little performers were Chang Fan-tzu, Lin I-ming, Wu I-ting, Chen Tzu-ting, Liu Wei-han, Chi Yung-hsun and Ang Sung Shao-hung.
