Updated Monday, February 4, 2008 0:00 am TWN, By Michelle Hsu, Special to the China Post Bright streetlights in Keelung shine on New Year’s blissThis year, Keelung will recommend another alternative where people can go during Chinese New Year (Feb. 6-11 in 2008): the commercial district around Yi-er Road, or Yi 2nd Road, only one block away from the Miaokou Night Market. The commercial district will become an area that doesn’t sleep during Chinese New Year, with streets full of neon lights sparkling all night from the beginning of February until the Lantern Festival on Feb. 21. In that sense it will echo the Miaokou Night Market, which stays open 24 hours a day all year round. In addition, a lantern celebration activity sponsored by the city government will be held on the street during the night of Feb. 16, the last weekend prior to the Lantern Festival. The end of the New Year’s celebration in mid-February, however, will mark the beginning of another stage of remodeling for the district, which has earned a reputation for being a model commercial district in Taiwan by developing a traditional commercial district with a modern look since 2001, under the “New Hometown” policy of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA). Located in the bustling downtown area, Yi-er Road and the other roads in the vicinity maintain a long tradition of comprising the most prosperous commercial district in Keelung, with streets full of stores to meet the demand of different groups of consumers. Some stores have been run as family businesses for generations and have maintained a good reputation in the local community. There are stores, restaurants, coffee shops, hotels, banks and cinemas in the district, constituting a full service shopping area. |
