The scholarship will allow the student to study at KSU for a length of time ranging from a few months to two years. The student may choose from a wide range of fields, including social work, agriculture, medical sciences or just intensive English studies, CIP said. The scholarship was donated by KSU alumni Lien Hua-chi and his wife, who are very much concerned about the education of Taiwan’s aborigine youth and the development of aboriginal tribes. Lien graduated from National Taiwan University in 1953, received a master’s degree in mechanical science from KSU in 1962, and a doctoral degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962. He donates the scholarship every year, in part to show appreciation for the assistance KSU has provided to Taiwanese students since 1950. KSU has a strong Taiwanese presence. It has a Taiwan Wing building donated by Taiwanese alumni. Those interested in applying for the scholarship must fill out a personal statement, saying how they will play a leadership role in their tribes and how study abroad will help them contribute toward development and sustainable growth in their communities. Candidates should also include in their application report cards from schools, recommendation letters from employers, and IDs proving they are aborigine. Applications must be submitted to Chou Sung-tien, Taiwan representative of the Lien Hua-chi Taiwan Aborigine Foundation, by the end of March.
