The World Games is to kick off July 16, 2009 in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan’s second largest city, located in the south of island. In traditional Taiwanese society, billiards is seen by many as a recreational activity of hooligans and high school drop outs. But Lo Guang-fu, the head of the club and a billiards player for the past six years, declared his intention “to change the stereotype of billiards players through my achievements.” Adding that full concentration is crucial while playing billiards, Lo said expert players must plan their shots meticulously to be successful. Chang Pei-yu, a beauty of the Wenzao Billiards Club, said that playing billiards benefited her in many aspects, adding: “Through practice, I have learned to assert myself.” The Wenzao Billiards Club, founded in 2007, now has 80 registered members, many of whom have won various titles in open competitions around Taiwan.
