2007 Taiwan White Paper Issues Appeals to the People of Taiwan

In its 2007 Taiwan White Paper, AmCham respectfully called on the people of Taiwan (and their organizations) to join the Chamber in urging the government to take decisive action on various issues that would significantly improve Taiwan’s quality of life, democratic growth, and international competitiveness.

Protect Taiwan’s People From Public-Health Criminals

Taiwan residents continue to have their health and that of their loved ones endangered by counterfeit medicines and by food grown with counterfeit agricultural chemicals. Some legislators actively interfere with law enforcement against counterfeiters for their private gain. Taiwan’s judiciary commonly gives convicted counterfeiters minor punishments that fail to deter them from resuming businesses that put people’s health at risk. The truth is simple – counterfeit medicines and chemicals are dangerous. The Chamber urges the public to join with AmCham to demand that public-health criminals and those who protect them be punished adequately.

Provide International Job Opportunities at Home

Why do Taiwan’s service industries lag so far behind other advanced economies? Over-regulation, onerous work-permit procedures, and a protectionist mindset discourage foreign investment, cutting Taiwan off from new types of business, new business models, the latest technology and on-the-job training. Innovation stimulates local investment, creates employment for recent graduates and retrains existing labor “on the job.” AmCham urges Taiwan to open its market to the world so Taiwan’s talented personnel can stay at home and work in or compete with world-class innovative businesses in a vigorous international environment.

Build Good IPR Habits Among Taiwan’s Youth

Growing levels of Internet crime and a high tolerance of counterfeiting in schools (including illegal Internet downloads and textbook copying) are teaching Taiwan’s students to be deaf and blind to intellectual property rights issues. These are not the habits of an advanced society. AmCham urges the Ministry of Education and all parents to join AmCham in rooting out these habits before they become life-long mindsets that undermine the brands and intellectual property rights of Taiwan’s own creative, cutting-edge companies.

Keep Families And Family Businesses Closer Together

Nearly 5% of Taiwan’s people live and work in China – with the majority estimated to be between the ages of 24 and 50. It’s time to make it easier for these people to be only hours away from spouses, children, senior family members, and business associates by being able to fly directly across the Taiwan Strait. This year is the 20th anniversary of the opening of travel from Taiwan to China. Few in 1987 would have guessed that it would take this long to allow regular, direct-route travel. Each year these restrictions needlessly hurt more and more Taiwan families – and family businesses. With regard to direct links, AmCham urges the government to listen to the pleas of its people – Just do it!
