Updated Saturday, December 15, 2007 0:00 am TWN, By Brian Asmus, Special to The China Post BCCT opens its heart, wallet to Taiwan’s needyAuctioneers Charles Garrett and Steven Parker welcomed the festive throng. They were followed by BCCT Chairman Mike Jewell, who stressed the importance of giving, not just during the holiday season, but throughout the year. During a sumptuous lunch or roast turkey with giblet gravy and traditional Christmas pudding, Madge Chen, village director of the S.O.S. Children’s Village gave a report on how past monies donated by the British Chamber had been put to use, while highlighting new areas of need. After revelers, including a table of naughty Santas, had been given ample opportunity to loosen up, courtesy plenty of Johnnie Walker and Bailey’s Irish Cream (thanks to Diageo) and Boddington’s and Beck’s beer (Cottingham & Co.), the live auction began in earnest. And what prizes! Standard Chartered Bank had donated a lovely blue and white vase, Marks & Spencer men’s and women’s clothing sets, PCA Life a return economy-class ticket to Bali and three nights at the Bali Hyatt, Glaxo Smith Kline a return economy-class ticket to Bangkok and three-night stay at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok and HSBC a spa package for two at the Lalu in addition to many others. Ecstatic BCCT Executive Director Kim Moore was highly pleased with the final tally. “We are just happy that the British community, which is known not only for its fun-filled events but also its generosity, can play an important role in helping those in need in Taiwan. The island is, in many ways, home to many British families and corporations, and I am proud to say that we are very good citizens.” Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%. Click here |
