AmCham members take tour of Taoyuan

AmCham organized a tour yesterday to take its members to Evergreen Aviation Technologies Corp., the Taoyuan Free Trade Zone (courtesy of FarGlory Co.), the Datan Thermal Power Plant and the Taoyuan High-Tech Industrial Park (courtesy of Asia Pacific Development Co.). During a luncheon hosted by the Taoyuan County Government, AmCham members met with Taoyuan County Magistrate Eric Li-luan Chu, who touted various investment and trade opportunities in his county.

The new free-trade zone, said Chu, offers companies many advantages. First, there is no customs representation within the entire zone. That means no examinations, no inspections and no customs clearance. There are also tax breaks, fewer restrictions on hiring of foreign labor and one-window administrative services, said Chu. Arrival visas for foreign business travelers and simplified embarkation procedures for visitors from China are also available. Finally, no bonds are required, goods do not need to be relabeled and all manner of assembly and production are allowed.

Reacting to information provided on the tour, AmCham Executive Director Richard Vuylsteke explained, “One of the things that struck us about the Taoyuan country magistrate, both here on this trip, and when he spoke at an AmCham luncheon at the Taipei World Trade Center Sept. 7, is that Chu clearly has a plan. He is very optimistic about the future of both Taiwan and the Taoyuan airport city project. Best of all, he has vision for where to go and how to build the infrastructure needed to get there. This tour has had real content.”

Taoyuan has great vision, agreed Nicholas Mckay, director of the Western Australia Trade Office. Trade and investment, he added, are the main drivers of economic development: “The new free-trade zone will serve as a good link between Taoyuan (and Taiwan) and the rest of the region and world.”

The tour also won words of praise from AmCham member Doris Wu, the Investment Trade Commissioner for Flanders at the Belgian Trade Office.

“Seeing these types of projects has enabled us to understand the opportunities that are available in Taoyuan. Our office can serve as a bridge in reporting this information back to our investors and businesspeople in Belgium. I was also very pleased to meet with representatives from some of the many advanced companies located in the county,” Wu said.
