Bilateral cooperation between Thailand and Taiwan is well-established, prosperingAllow me to turn to the bilateral cooperation between Thailand and Taiwan, which has been well-established and continuous. At present, various dimensions of bilateral cooperation between Thailand and Taiwan are also prospering. Taiwan has been an important trade partner for Thailand in past decades, ranking among the country's top 10 bilateral trade partners. The volume of trade between Taiwan and Thailand in 2006 was US$7.894 billion. Thailand is no longer just an export destination for Taiwanese products, but also has become a major distribution center for Taiwanese products in Southeast Asia. Moreover, cumulative investment from Taiwan ranks among the largest sources of foreign direct investment in Thailand, with a total cumulative investment volume of around US$11.961 billion at the end of March 2007. People-to-people contact through Buddhism and social and cultural similarity is also noteworthy. On the one hand, Thailand remains a popular tourist destination for more than 300,000 Taiwanese (January - October 2007). Thailand is a well-known destination for delicious cuisine, beautiful beaches, warm people and excellent hospitality facilities. On the other hand, the flow of over 80,000 laborers nowadays from Thailand into Taiwan's construction and industrial sector has also contributed to the rapid economic growth of Taiwan. Moreover, regular direct flights facilitate travel between Thailand and Taiwan, not only between Taipei and Bangkok but also with direct flights to other destinations in both countries such as Taipei-Phuket, Taipei-Chiang Mai, and Kaohsiung Bangkok. With such dynamic cooperation between Taiwan and Thailand, as illustrated in these examples, the future relationship will certainly be even closer, both economically and socially, enabling prosperity that will benefit the people of both Taiwan and Thailand. | |||||||||||||
