VAC taking steps to help veterans get employedRealizing that getting a good job requires a good education, VAC has worked with several technological universities to provide education for some 169 veterans on a recommendation basis, and provide scholarships for 1,895 veterans in 2007. The VAC has also helped 1,378 veterans enroll in college continuing education classes and helped 152 veterans take national-level tests. Right now, there are 280 veterans taking Ph.D courses, 664 taking master's degree courses, 477 taking undergrad courses, and 113 taking vocational training classes. The total is 1,534. The VAC is also providing various job training programs for veterans. It has set up a job training center in Taoyuan County, and similar centers in central and southern Taiwan will be set up by the end of October. Meanwhile, the commission has opened 92 job training classes, in which 2,940 people took part. About 95 percent of students passed licensing exams after taking these courses, and some 40 percent got jobs. In terms of job-related awareness campaigns, the VAC has selected 300 veterans to work as interns at major enterprises. It has also held 54 job fairs, with a total of 6,134 veterans and 1,869 companies attending. A total of 581 participating veterans got jobs as a result of the job fairs. Also, the VAC has held three job seminars for mainland and foreign spouses married to veterans to help them find jobs, too. To help veterans interested in creating their own business, the VAC has held 20 entrepreneurship seminars and invited about 740 entrepreneur veterans to share their insights and experience in creating enterprises. Meanwhile, the VAC has held 17 entrepreneurship and franchise licensing exhibitions and invited 620 veterans interested in entrepreneurship to attend, so that they can gain a better understanding of the requirements and risks of creating business. As for consolidating government and private resources, the VAC has worked with such companies as 1111 Job Bank and 104 Corp. to provide the latest information on jobs to facilitate veterans looking for employment. "From now on, the VAC will better utilize social resources, upgrade service excellence and efficiency, and put forth more awareness campaigns to help more veterans find work," the commission said. | |||||||||||||
