Japan beats Bulgaria 3-2 in World League volleyball

TOKYO -- Japan pulled off an upset over world bronze medalists Bulgaria in the preliminary group round of the World League men's volleyball tournament on Sunday.

The Japanese spikers rallied to a 26-24, 13-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-13 win for their second victory against six defeats in Group C, which also includes Russia and Cuba.

The Bulgarians now have three wins against five defeats and stay in third place.

Sixteen teams were divided into four groups in the preliminary round. The winning team from each group along with the overall next best-performing side will join hosts Serbia in the finals, to be played July 22-26 in Belgrade.
