LONDON--Taiwanese tennis player Chan Hao-ching and Belarusian partner Max Mirnyi advanced to the semifinals of the Wimbledon mixed doubles Friday, the best performance ever achieved by Chan in a grand slam event.
The No. 14-seeded duo defeated the No. 10-seeded combination of Jamie Murray of the United Kingdom and Casey Dellacqua of Australia 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the quarter-finals.
Chan and Mirnyi will next face No. 5 seeds Daniel Nestor of Canada and Kristina Mladenovic of France in the seminals.
Chan, 21, is the only Taiwanese player remaining in this year's Wimbledon. This is her third appearance at the world's oldest tennis championships.
Chan said she was very excited about reaching the semifinals in such an important event and that the achievement has significantly boosted her confidence.
Describing Mirnyi as an excellent player, Chan said she first teamed up with the 37-year-old at the French Open and has since developed a good camaraderie with him.
Chan also said she and Mirnyi have a “secret weapon” to secure victory, which she would not disclose.
