At the women's doubles event of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, top seeded player Hsieh Su-wei and her Chinese partner Peng Shuai bested Julia Goerges of Germany and Barbora Zahlavova Strycov from the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4 to cruise into the semifinals.
The victory marks the first time that the 27-year-old Hsieh has made it into the semifinals at the tournament since she and Taiwanese partner Chuang Chia-jung were stopped at the final four in 2008.
Hsieh, who won the Wimbledon title with Peng in July, left an excited post on her public Facebook page, where she said she is eyeing the year end championship in Istanbul now that her win has pushed her up to third on the Race to the WTA Championships Doubles standings.
Meanwhile, another top Taiwanese player, Chan Hao-ching, and her partner Liezel Huber from the U.S. also managed to advance. The pair trounced Jelena Jankovic from Serbia and Katarina Srebotnik from Solvenia 6-1, 6-2 to make it into the semifinals of the US$2.37 million tournament.
The duo will square off against Kirsten Flipkens from Belgium and Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic for the right to play in the tournament's final match.
Not to be outshined, top male Taiwanese player Lu Yen-hsun bested Luka Rosol from the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-2 in two straights sets at the singles in the Thailand Open.
It took Lu, ranked 52nd in the world, 57 minutes to beat his opponent, ranked 46th, to advance into the quarter finals.
The Taiwanese player is set to face off next against top seeded player Tomas Berdych from the Czech Republic.
Lu was not so lucky in the men's doubles later in the day, however. Third-seeded Jamie Murray from the UK and Australian John Peers beat Lu and his Thai partner Danai Udomchoke 7-6 (7), 7-5 in the quarter finals.
This last week was a busy one for Lu, who on Sunday successfully defnded his singles title at the OEC Kaohsiung ATP Challenger.
