TAIPEI--Taiwan's Lu Yen-hsun won his third ATP Challenger event of the year yesterday with a straight-sets victory over Yuichi Sugita of Japan at the US$100,000 Samsung Securities Cup Challenger in Seoul.
The top-seeded Lu got the tough match he expected from the world No. 131 Japanese but prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (4) in one hour 46 minutes.
The win, worth 110 ranking points, will likely move Lu back into the top 55 in the men's singles rankings. His best career ranking is 33rd, reached in November 2010.
Taiwan's top-ranked men's player, currently ranked 66th in the world, struggled on serve in the first set.
However, he managed to save five of the seven break points against him while breaking the sixth-seeded Sugita three times.
Lu served nearly flawlessly in the second set, but he could not break through against his 24-year-old Japanese opponent in five breakpoint tries, sending the set to a tiebreaker.
He previously won Challenger events in Singapore in February and Shanghai in September.
