Women's doubles player Hsieh eliminated from US Open semisCNA TAIPEI--Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) and her Spanish partner Anabel Medina Garrigues lost in the U.S. Open women's doubles semifinals in New York Thursday, but the Taiwanese veteran still matched her best showing ever at a Grand Slam doubles event.
September 8, 2012, 12:03 am TWN Hsieh and Medina lost the match 7-6 (2), 6-4 to Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka of Czech Republic in 1 hour, 51 minutes, unable to hold off their aggressive opponents, who had 40 winners, to only 23 for the losers. The Czech duo defeated Hsieh and countrywoman Chuang Chia-jung in the quarterfinals of the London Olympics in August, and Hsieh would have loved to get even in Flushing Meadows. But Hsieh and Medina were only able to break their opponents three times in seven tries while the Czechs converted 4 of 11 break points of their own.
