TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Honduran National Team, most commonly known as "La H" (referring to the first letter of the country's name), will be participating for the third time in the World Cup — and for the second time in a row.
Los Catrachos' (the Hondurans') first appearance on the biggest international stage was at the 1982 World Cup in Spain, which they qualified for by winning the 1981 CONCACAF Championship. As well as being a competitive tournament in its own right, the now defunct Championship also served to determine the World Cup qualifiers from the CONCACAF governed regions. The Hondurans certainly boosted their profile in even reaching the 1982 tournament as they qualified ahead of the much-fancied Mexico.
In 2010 Honduras again qualified for the World Cup being held in South Africa. By this point the format of CONCACAF qualification had been updated, and after entering at the second-round stage Honduras made it through a further two rounds to secure the third of three automatic qualification spots behind the United States and Mexico.
This time, for Brazil's 2014 World Cup, the team qualified in a similar fashion to 2010, and obtained the third automatic qualification spot. Being led by Luis Fernando Suarez, the team and the country have high hopes for this iteration of the World Cup tournament.
For Hondurans, soccer or "futbol" is a passion that is shared by everyone; it unites the people and brings joy to each individual no matter where they might be. An example of this can be seen in the recent Copa America Tournament that was held in Taipei, were fellow Hondurans who reside on the island cheered their team.
The Embassy of Honduras in Taiwan invites any soccer enthusiast to join in the fun and watch the matches of the Honduran National Soccer team.
